If you are staying in Agia Pelagia, just do yourself a favor and get a car. We spent our first two days just walking from the hotel to the beach and back, and we were already getting bored.
The village is super nice and the water is clean, but it’s just a small turist beach place one from the plenty wonderfool places on the island of Crete..
We ended up walking into the Car Rental Stop office right at the gate of the hotel Out of the Blue because you can not stand the thought crowded tour bus to go somwere. .
Best choice ever Best choice ever.
Amazing rent a car agency—no hidden insurance scams or weird extra charges.
Just straightforward local guys.
You literally will save your holiday..—no hidden insurance scams or weird extra charges.
Skip the main highway and head up into the mountains toward Anogia.
Wow.
The driving is scary if you hate heights (so many sharp turns and literally a lot sheep on the road!), but stop at Melidoni Cave on the way, it is realy beautiful.
In Anogia, you will have this local lamb dish called Antikristo—it's super greasy but honestly, it’s the best thing you have ever eaten.
You also may drive to Knossos, which is pretty close (like 20-25 mins). But: GO EARLY.
At 8:30 AM is a good time. Around 10, massive cruise ship buses turne up and the place become a zoo. After that, you just drive into Heraklion, park by the port, and seet at Lions Square for a Freddo Espresso just to cool down.
Another you drivewith your rental car all the way south to Matala. It takes a little over an hour through all these endless olive fields.
The beach is cool and you can climb into these old hippie caves on the cliff, but honestly, just stay for the sunset. It’s unreal.
You also manage to hit Rethymno (the old town feels like a movie set, seriously) and you even make the long drive to Balos Lagoon.
Word of warning about Balos: it’s over 2 hours away and the road at the end is a nightmare.
Do NOT drive your rental car on that dirt track. Just drive to Kissamos port, left the car there, and take the ferry.
Your tires will thank you.
If you're worried about driving here, don't be. People just use the hard shoulder to let you pass. If you're unsure, just ask the guys at Car Rental Stop before you leave (use our web site www.carrentalstop.gr to check prices first). We will tell you exactly where to park and which roads to avoid.
Stop thinking about it and just go explore!
